What is NDA & CDS?
The National Defence Academy (NDA) and Combined Defence Services (CDS) are two of the most popular exams conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) to recruit candidates for various defence services in India. These exams are highly competitive and require extensive preparation and dedication to crack. The purpose of both NDA and CDS exams is to select suitable candidates for the Indian Armed Forces, including the Army, Navy, and Air Force
NDA Exam – An Overview
The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducts the National Defence Academy (NDA) examination biannually to recruit candidates for the Indian Armed Forces. In a year, the NDA 01 exam is scheduled for April, and the NDA 02 exam is scheduled for September. It’s essential to kickstart your exam preparation promptly.
Eligibility Criteria

NDA, candidates must have completed their 12th education from a recognized board or university. Additionally, candidates must have studied Mathematics and Physics as compulsory subjects in their 12th education if they want to apply for the Air Force or the Navy. Candidates who are appearing for their 12th exams are also eligible to apply for NDA, but they must submit proof of passing the exam before the commencement of the course at NDA.

Apart from educational qualifications, there are other eligibility criteria that candidates must fulfil to apply for NDA. The age limit is one such criterion. For NDA, candidates must be between 16.5 and 19.5 years of age on the first day of the month in which the course is due to commence.

Selection Process

The selection process for NDA consists of a written exam (GAT and Maths), followed by an interview by the Services Selection Board (SSB).

Candidates who clear the written exam are called for the SSB interview, which includes various tests such as the Psychological test, Group Testing Officer Tasks (GTO), and Personal Interview.

The final selection is based on the candidate’s performance in the written exam as well as the SSB interview.

Exam Pattern
  • The NDA exam is conducted in two stages – a written exam and an SSB interview.
  • The written exam consists of two papers – Mathematics and General Ability Test (GAT).
  • The mathematics paper has a total of 300 marks, and the GAT paper has 600 marks.
  • The total duration of the written exam is 5 hours.
  • Both papers are of objective type and have negative markings for wrong answers.
  • The SSB interview is a 5-day long process and has two stages – Stage I and Stage II.
  • Candidates who clear the written exam are called for the SSB interview.
  • The final selection is based on the candidate’s performance in both the written exam and the SSB interview.

CDS 2024 Exam – An Overview

Eligibility Criteria

CDS requires candidates to have completed their graduation from a recognized university or institution. The degree can be in any discipline, but candidates who wish to join the Air Force Academy must have studied Mathematics and Physics in their 10+2 education or graduation.

Apart from educational qualifications, there are other eligibility criteria that candidates must fulfil to apply for CDS. For CDS, the age limit is between 20 and 24 years on the first day of the month in which the course is due to commence.

Candidates who clear the written exam are called for the SSB interview, which includes various tests such as the Psychological test, Group Testing Officer Tasks (GTO), and Personal Interview.

The final selection is based on the candidate’s performance in the written exam as well as the SSB interview.

  • The written exam consists of three papers – English, General Knowledge, and Mathematics.
  • Each paper has a total of 100 marks, and the total duration of the written exam is 6 hours.
  • The English and General Knowledge papers are of objective type, while the Mathematics paper is of subjective type.
  • There is a negative marking for wrong answers in the objective type papers.
  • The SSB interview is a 5-day long process and has two stages – Stage I and Stage II.
  • Candidates who clear the written exam are called for the SSB interview.
  • The final selection is based on the candidate’s performance in both the written exam and the SSB interview.

Officers who join any of the three wings of the defence department are fairly and almost equally compensated but, since the CDS candidates join after completing their graduation they might earn a marginally better salary. Candidates should note that they should focus on their overall career goals and pick the examination that suits them best.
